Parque Luro Nature Reserve

Information

It is a natural reserve located in the province of La Pampa, about 33 kilometres from its capital Santa Rosa. It is very much visited by the inhabitants of that city, especially on weekends and holidays, as well as by tourists. It has a grocery store, restaurant, camping site, tables with chairs and barbecues.

This protected area preserves its caldén forest, sand dunes and its lagoon/salt marsh. It is a good place for wildlife watchers, as there are low-difficulty trails for self-guided tours. Besides the native species of the region, there are exotic species that were introduced many years ago, such as the red deer (Cervus elaphus) and the wild boar (Sus scrofa). A great attraction of this park is the rutting season, between March and April, when male deer can be seen fighting for females and territory.

Regarding the history of the place, it was originally a hunting reserve, and it was when deer and wild boars were introduced. Its first owner, Don Pedro Luro, had his residence in what is now the El Castillo Museum. Nowadays you can also visit his other museum San Huberto, the Tambo Modelo, the Tanque del Millón and go through its interpretation centre.

The access to the park is on National Road 35, where there is a booth where they charge an entrance ticket. From there there is a 3 km internal route to the recreational area.
