Information

The Xcacel-Xcacelito Sea Turtle Sanctuary is a protected area for the conservation of loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) and green turtles (Chelonia mydas), both of which are in danger of extinction.

The access road to this site is on Route 307 between Tulum and Playa del Carmen (20 km from Tulum and 44 km from Playa del Carmen). From there it is 500 metres along an internal road to reach the place.

When you enter the site, you have to pay an entrance fee. There is a car park and toilets at the entrance.

In this area we can find an extensive beach of white sand, totally natural, without buildings or resorts, ideal for those who prefer nature. There are also trails and a cenote called Xcacelito, which must be checked if they are enabled.

The turtle nesting season is from May to September, usually at night. And the turtle release season is from July to November. Sometimes there are programmes where visitors are allowed to participate in the turtle release (for a fee).
