San José Palace

Information

It is a historic site in the Argentine province of Entre Ríos, quite well known among those who come to visit the nearby towns along the Uruguay River.

It can be reached via an access road of about 4 km that branches off Provincial Route 39, which connects Concepción del Uruguay with Basavilbaso. In total, it is about 32 km from Concepción, 40 km from Basavilbaso, 62 km from Colón and 90 km from Gualeguaychú.

The visit takes approximately 1 hour, although of course it depends on the pace each visitor chooses. At certain times, the museum offers guided tours and it can also be visited on a self-guided basis, although this should be confirmed there in case it changes at some point.

It is the place that served as the residence and where former governor and president Justo José de Urquiza carried out his political duties. The palace began to be built in 1848 and was expanded and improved over the years. It had running water, which was something new at the time. It had all the comforts for him and his family, including a game room and a chapel. There were a significant number of rooms and the necessary facilities to receive other politicians of the time. It is worth mentioning that Urquiza was also assassinated at this palace.

From the palace, a path of about 50 meters leads to a small artificial lake, which Urquiza ordered to be built at the time as a recreational area. Today it is much shallower and is a good place for birdwatching in the area.
