Los Menhires

Information

It is an archaeological reserve situated in the locality of El Mollar, in the province of Tucumán.

In this area you can observe a series of large lithic sculptures called Menhires. There are some that measure up to 4 or even 5 metres high, and have on one of their faces some figures such as human faces, animals (like llamas) and geometrical shapes engraved on their relief. They belong to the Tafi culture, which inhabited the province between 300 BC and 600 AD. It is believed that these sculptures were made for religious ceremonies.

The pieces that can be seen were originally scattered in different parts of the Tafí valley, were moved several times and were finally placed in this reserve in order to preserve them.

To get to the locality of El Mollar where the reserve is situated:
- It is about 14 km from Tafí del Valle and about 96 km from San Miguel del Tucumán, in both cases by paved roads.
- There are daily buses coming from the capital city of Tucumán.
