Information
It is a tourist locality situated on the coast of the Caribbean Sea. It receives a large number of visitors who come to visit the beaches in the area, and also those who then continue on to Bocas del Toro in Panama.
It has grocery shops, an ATM, restaurants and accommodation. There are many stalls selling handicrafts.
It has its own white sand beach, not suitable for bathing. There are many other beaches in the outskirts and in the immediate vicinity:
- To the west is Playa Negra (Negra beach), which has dark sand and can be reached on foot.
- To the east there is a succession of beaches, practically one after the other. There is Cockles beach, Chiquita beach, Punta Uva beach and others, which can be reached by taxi or bus.
How to get to Puerto Viejo:
- By bus: buses come from Cahuita, Limón, Manzanillo, San José (Atlántico Norte terminal) and Sixaola.
- By car: the village is located on Route 256. Combining this road with Route 36 it is 16 km in total from the access to Cahuita and 58 km from the city of Limón.
