Wildlife Watching in Cabo Blanco

Information

The Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve, at the southern tip of Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, is a good place for wildlife observation. Besides being a protected area that preserves its ecosystem, it has a 4.5 km long trail that allows you to walk through it.

Here you can see common mammals such as Central American agoutis, mantled howler monkey, panamanian white-throated capuchins, white-nosed coati, etc. This reserve protects the Central American spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), which is in great danger of extinction.

There are many species of birds recorded. Some of them are abundant and very showy, such as the turquoise-browed motmot (Eumomota superciliosa), black-headed trogon (Trogon melanocephalus) and white-throated magpie-jay (Calocitta formosa).

To the south is Cabo Blanco Island, where the brown booby (Sula leucogaster) nests.
