Information
It is a locality of the Quebrada de Humahuaca (a ravine), located at 2465 metres above sea level. It is situated on the riverside of the Grande River to the northwest and its tributary, the Huasamayo River, to the south. It has a tourist information office, grocery shops, petrol station, restaurants, campsite and accommodation. There is a municipal market where you can buy typical products of the area.
It is a very popular destination for tourists, with many attractions to visit:
- It has a main square with handicraft stalls. About 100 metres away there is another small square in front of the church of the Virgen del Rosario and San Francisco de Asis, also known simply as the church of Tilcara.
- There is the Dr. Eduardo Casanova Archaeological Museum, where objects from pre-Hispanic cultures are exhibited, many of them from the Puna and the Quebrada de Humahuaca. You can also visit the Irureta Visual Arts Museum, the José Antonio Terry Regional Painting Museum and the Ernesto Soto Avendaño Sculpture Museum.
- Pucará de Tilcara: it is located on the outskirts, about 500 metres after crossing the bridge over the Huasamayo River. It is an archaeological site corresponding to the pre-Columbian Tilcara culture.
- Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat): it is about 6.5 kilometres away from the town. It is a walk along the Huasamayo River that runs between high walls up to a waterfall.
To get to Tilcara:
- By bus: there is public transportation from Abra Pampa, Humahuaca, La Quiaca and San Salvador de Jujuy.
- By car: it is on National Route 9, which connects it with Humahuaca (43 km), La Quiaca (199 km), access to Purmamarca (22 km), San Salvador de Jujuy (82 km) and many other destinations.
