Uquía

Information

It is a locality in the province of Jujuy, placed above 2800 metres above sea level. It is situated in the Quebrada de Humahuaca (a ravine), about 10 km from the city of Humahuaca and 32 km from Tilcara. There is accommodation and food shopping.

An attraction is the church of the Santa Cruz and San Francisco de Paula, which dates back to 1691, and has paintings made by indigenous from Cusco. In front of the church there is a handicraft market where they sell weavings and ceramic objects.

A good place to go for a walk is the 'Quebrada de las Señoritas', whose access is just past the town cemetery. There is parking for vehicles and it takes about 3 hours round trip. You walk through a landscape of yellowish and reddish geoforms, and at times the trail goes through the middle of the rock formations.

How to get to Uquía:
- By bus: stop on buses that travel along the Quebrada de Humahuaca and make the route from La Quiaca to San Salvador de Jujuy.
- By car: Uquía is located on National Route 9, which connects it to other localities of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, La Quiaca and San Salvador de Jujuy.
