Wildlife Watching in Laguna de los Pozuelos

In this protected area you can observe typical high altitude fauna, both terrestrial and aquatic. In the case of birds, it should be taken into account that many of them are migratory, so depending on the species, they may or may not be found at certain times of the year.

A large number of birds frequent the extensive Laguna de los Pozuelos. Many of them are usually far from the shore (especially when there are people), so it is advisable to bring binoculars or cameras with good zoom. The three flamingos of Argentina are present in large numbers: the Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis), the Puna flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi) and the Andean flamingo (Phoenicoparrus andinus). Other common species are the Andean avocet (Recurvirostra andina), giant coot (Fulica gigantea), Andean goose (Chloephaga melanoptera) and Puna teal (Spatula puna).

Along the water's edge you can see the Puna plover (Charadrius alticola), Andean gull (Larus serranus), Baird's Sandpiper (Calidris bairdii) and Andean negrito (Lessonia oreas).

As far as land birds are concerned, the lesser rhea (Rhea pennata) often pass by. On the roads, it is very common to see some Andean matamico (Phalcoboenus megalopterus) perched on the posts, or the Puna miner (Geositta punensis) on the steppe floor.

Among the mammals, vicunas (Vicugna vicugna) are everywhere.
