Laguna de los Pozuelos Natural Monument

Information

It is a protected area of the puna, located in the province of Jujuy.

Within its limits is the Laguna de los Pozuelos (like a lake), which is at 3600 metres above sea level and has a surface of more than 16000 hectares. It has salty water, its main tributaries are the Cincel River to the south and the Santa Catalina River to the north, and its extension can increase during the summer because it is the season when some rains are registered in the region.

In the laguna you can observe a variety of high altitude aquatic birds, some of which are present in large numbers. There is also terrestrial fauna, such as vicunas, which can be seen everywhere.

Please note that in the protected area there are no services and there are no shops. Although it can be visited all year round, bear in mind that in summer (December to March) rainfall can make the roads impassable.

Tourists enter through the Río Cincel section. A few metres away from the park ranger office there is a dirt road that starts parallel to the river, and it is 7 km to the shore of the laguna. To get to this section:
- By bus: there is public transport that connects Abra Pampa-Rinconada and passes by the entrance to the protected area. Take into account that from there you have to walk to the body of water.
- By car: from the locality of Abra Pampa, which is on National Route 9, take Provincial Route 7 and it is 47 kilometres to the natural monument.
