Wildlife Watching in Ushuaia

Information

Different places in Ushuaia and its surroundings allow you to record species that are rare in other parts of the country:
- The Bahía Encerrada Urban Nature Reserve (which is within the city limits) and the coasts of Golondrina Bay (which is on the way to the airport), are ideal for those who go for the first time and want to get to know the typical species of the region. For example, you can see the kelp goose (Chloephaga hybrida), the dolphin gull (Larus scoresbii), the magellanic steamerduck (Tachyeres pteneres) and the flying steamerduck (Tachyeres patachonicus).
- At various places along the coast and especially at the municipal rubbish dump, the white-throated caracara (Phalcoboenus albogularis) can be seen.
- The Martial Glacier is frequented by the yellow-bridled finch (Melanodera xanthogramma) and other such as the dark-faced ground-tyrant (Muscisaxicola maclovianus).
- The gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) is seen on Martillo Island, preferably in summer (January and February). The king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) can also be seen on the same island.
- The black cinclodes (Cinclodes maculirostris) is often recorded on some islands and islets, for example on the islet of Les Éclaireurs lighthouse.

Other species common to the Patagonian coast such as the South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens), imperial shag (Leucocarbo atriceps) and southern giant petrel (Macronectes giganteus) are seen during many of the nautical excursions offered.
