Main attractions: the southernmost province of the country, with different activities depending on the time of the year. In the colder months there are ski areas. From December to March there are trekking trails. And there are islands to visit with boat trips.
The island of Tierra del Fuego is actually a part of the province called Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands, which is the southernmost of the whole country.
Starting with the relief and climate, the north of the island is dry steppe. As you move south you start to see a transition with undulations, until you reach a more humid Andean southwest with forests and peat bogs.
There is plenty to see and do throughout its territory:
- The city of Rio Grande, which is the second in number of inhabitants, offers activities on its long sea coast.
- Tolhuin, a small village near Lake Fagnano, offers the possibility of various walks and trails.
- Its capital Ushuaia is the most populated city. It has an important number of tourist attractions on its coast and in the city itself. Besides, it offers the possibility of making different boat trips. On its outskirts you can visit the Martial Glacier (where there are snow activities during the coldest months) and hike to the Laguna Esmeralda (a swallos lake).
- The Tierra del Fuego National Park is undoubtedly a destination of choice for those interested in nature and trekking. Different trails allow you to explore its environments and landscapes, such as its sea coast, the Lake Roca or Lake Acigami, rivers and peat bogs.
- A unique ride is the End of the World Train (Tren del Fin del Mundo), which allows you to learn about the history of the island while enjoying a trip through southern landscapes.
Both the main island and the smaller ones nearby are excellent places to get to know the southern fauna, such as penguin species that cannot be seen in other Argentinean provinces. In addition, the presence of beaver lodges in different rivers and streams, which are dams built by beavers (exotic mammals that were introduced years ago), is also a remarkable sight.
