It is a city located in the north of Tierra del Fuego, and it is the second in population and importance of the province. It is located on the coast in a steppe area, where the river of the same name (Rio Grande) flows into.
It has services such as a tourist information office, supermarkets, petrol stations, banks, ATMs and accommodation.
Amongst the city's natural tourist attractions and walks, we can mention some of the most important ones:
- It has a coastline with kilometres of beaches, which become wide when the tide goes out. It is a recommended site for the observation of sea birds.
- Laguna de los Patos Urban Nature Reserve: it includes a laguna (like a lake) located in the middle of the city, which has a path with a viewpoint on its side. It is another good place to see wild bird species.
- Punta Popper Urban Nature Reserve: it is located on the mouth of the Grande River. It has a trail and viewpoints.
How to get to Rio Grande:
- By plane: its international airport is served by direct flights from Buenos Aires every day. There may also be (confirm) flights from Comodoro Rivadavia and Río Gallegos on some days of the week. From many other places there are flights with stopovers.
- By bus: there are bus lines that come and go from the bus terminal in Ushuaia to the terminal in Río Grande (it takes about 3.5 hours). Some of them make intermediate stops in Tolhuin.
- By car: you can get there by National Route 3. My recommendation is to use a GPS or check beforehand on a map to which part of Río Grande you want to go, because when I went there I found that the locality is wider than I imagined (it has several neighbourhoods) and it was hard for me to locate the area I wanted to visit.
