Buenos Aires City

The city of Buenos Aires is the capital and the most populous city in Argentina. Together with several surrounding districts (which belong to the province of Buenos Aires), it forms the Greater Buenos Aires, which is one of the most densely populated urban areas on the continent.

It is located on the Río de la Plata, and the Riachuelo runs alongside it. It is worth mentioning that there are no authorised bathing sites in either of these two rivers, as their waters are polluted.

It has a variety of services for tourists, such as tourist information offices, shopping centres, restaurants, petrol stations, ATMs and money exchange offices. For accommodation you can find hotels with a wide range of prices.

Visitors usually drive through the so-called microcentro, where several of the city's tourist and cultural attractions are located. There is the Obelisk (a 67.5 metre high monument), the Cabildo (a historical site and museum) and the Casa Rosada (the seat of the government). Further away are the Bosques de Palermo, which is a large green space with artificial lakes where you can see wild birds.

For those who are interested in natural areas, there is the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, where you can walk along trails and observe species of fauna of the region.

Regarding when to go to Buenos Aires, one point to take into account is the climate:
- One characteristic is the thermal amplitude existing between the extreme seasons of the year. Summers tend to be hot, and especially in January there can be days of very high temperatures. In winter, on the other hand, there are days of intense cold, especially in July and August.
- As far as rainfall is concerned, although on average it tends to be somewhat lower in the middle of the year, there is no dry season. In other words, it can rain at any time of the year.
