Information
It is a tourist locality and the best known destination of the coast of Río Negro.
It has services such as tourist information office, petrol stations, ATMs, supermarkets and restaurants. It has many accommodations of different prices and levels.
Along the coast there is a path with several slopes down to the beach, which are signposted as first slope, second slope, etc. Undoubtedly the most striking is where the caves are, which are like caverns formed by the erosion of the cliffs due to the sea, which give the town its Spanish name. These caves can be visited at low tide (check the tide times at the tourist information office).
As for when to go, the best time to go is undoubtedly from December to March, as the weather is warm and you can take advantage of the beach. An important feature is that the water temperature on this coast is higher than you would expect for the latitude, due to a combination of atmospheric and marine factors.
It must be taken into account that during the high summer season (January and February) and some long weekends, hotel occupancy may be very high and it may be difficult to get a place, so it is advisable to make reservations in advance during those dates.
To get to Las Grutas, there are direct buses from many places in the country, such as Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Neuquén, Puerto Madryn, Rosario, San Antonio Oeste, San Carlos de Bariloche, Trelew, etc.
