Information

It is a tourist town in Jujuy, considered one of the most beautiful in the province, as it is located at the foot of the Cerro de los Siete Colores (Seven Colours Hill). It is also on the banks of the Purmamarca River, which forms a ravine, at an altitude of 2,324 metres above sea level.

It has services such as a tourist information office, restaurants and accommodation.

It receives many visitors as it has several attractions to visit:
- Around its main square 9 de Julio there are many handicraft stalls selling weavings and ceramic objects. Opposite is the Cabildo, which was built in the 19th century, and on the other side is the Santa Rosa de Lima church, which dates back to 1648. Next to the church, on Belgrano Street, there is a historic algarrobo negro (black carob tree, Prosopis nigra) that is about 700 years old.
- A great attraction is undoubtedly the Paseo de los Colorados, a 2.5 km long circuit that can be done by car or on foot. During the walk you can appreciate the colouring and geological forms of the surroundings of the Cerro de los Siete Colores (Seven Colours Hill).
- Once out of the locality, if you take route 52 towards the west you can enjoy an excellent drive. First you cross the Cuesta de Lipán (a slope) through a corniche road, and later on you will arrive at the Salinas Grandes (a salt flat) to appreciate its gigantic salt surface.

To get to Purmamarca:
a) By bus: there is public transport from Humahuaca, Maimara, San Salvador de Jujuy and Tilcara.
b) By car: Purmamarca is on National Route 52, which connects it:
- To the west it is 254 km on asphalt to the international pass of Jama, through which you can reach the Chilean towns of San Pedro de Atacama and later Calama.
- To the east it is 3.5 km to intercept National Route 9, which connects it to the localities of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, La Quiaca and San Salvador de Jujuy.
