Iberá Wetlands

Information

It is a large wetland with swamps, marshes, scrublands and grasslands located in the centre-north of the province of Corrientes. It occupies approximately 13000 km² and is a protected nature reserve.

It is fed by rainfall and part of the water is lost through evaporation. Its drainage is slow due to the gentle slope and occurs mainly through the Corriente and Miriñay Rivers that originate in the Iberá. The Corriente River finally flows into the Paraná River and the Miriñay River into the Uruguay River.

This is an area of great biodiversity, where you can easily see wildlife such as capybaras, monkeys, caimans and a large number of birds. And it is also home to endangered species such as the maned wolf, marsh deer, neotropical otters and many more.

It has several portals to enter and get to know the wetland. The two most common for visitors are Cambyretá near the city of Ituzaingó and Laguna Iberá by Carlos Pellegrini. Among the activities that can be found, depending on the entrance gate, are hiking, boat trips, camping and, of course, wildlife watching in all of them.

Regarding the time of the year to visit them, it must be taken into account that in the summer months (December to March), on some days the heat can be overwhelming for hiking (especially at midday) and the amount of insects can be annoying. Therefore, to be comfortable, it is best to go in the middle of the year or the months in between.
