It is a tourist town in the west of the province of Chubut. It is at the foot of the Cerro La Cruz (a hill), which can be seen from different parts of the urban area.
It has services to receive visitors, such as tourist information offices, automatic teller machines, petrol stations, various shops and car rentals. There are restaurants and accommodation in a wide range of prices.
Besides the attractions of the nearby Los Alerces National Park, there are activities to do in the same locality and its surroundings:
- For those who visit it, a trip on the tourist train La Trochita, which runs from Esquel station to Nahuel Pan station, is not to be missed. This railway is currently in operation, keeping the original formations and fuel source.
- You can also visit the recreational area La Cascada, which has a day use place, a trail and a body of water with a waterfall.
- Just outside the city is the Laguna La Zeta Urban Nature Reserve with beaches, trails and viewpoints. It is a good place to spend an afternoon picnicking and bird watching.
- For those who enjoy snow activities, the La Hoya centre is nearby.
As for when to go to Esquel, that will depend on the activities you want to do during your visit. For snow sports, winter is best (July and August). For hiking, visiting lakes and exploring the forest, summer is best (December to March). If you also want to see the blooming tulip fields on the outskirts of Trevelin, you should go in October (exact dates should be confirmed).
