It is a tourist city located in the Argentinean Patagonia, in the southwest of the province of Río Negro. It is 12 km away from Lago Puelo (Chubut Province) and 118 km from San Carlos de Bariloche. It is situated in an Andean valley through which the Quemquemtreu and Azul Rivers run parallel to each other, in the middle of forests and mountains.
It has services to receive visitors, such as a tourist information office, petrol station, ATM, supermarkets, restaurants and lodging.
In the centre of the city there is the Plaza Pagano (Pagano square) with its artificial lake, where a lot of people usually gather. Around it there are food stalls, craft stalls and children's playgrounds. On the outskirts of the city there are some classic walks:
- Mirador del Río Azul: it is a place with a panoramic view where you can appreciate the Azul River at the foot of the mountains.
- Cabeza del Indio: there are two trails. One leads to a viewpoint of the valley formed by the Azul River, and the other one to a geological form that resembles the face of an Indian.
- Cerro Amigo (a trail and a hill): this is a municipal reserve with trails and viewpoints.
- Bosque Tallado: it is a forest with carved wooden trunks located on the slope of a hill.
- You can visit different waterfalls such as the Mallín Ahogado and Nahuel Pan waterfalls.
Besides, El Bolsón is one of the great trekking destinations in the country, which is why it receives crowds of national and foreign visitors for this activity. It has become popular thanks to the number of trails in its surroundings, with degrees of difficulty ranging from easy to highly demanding. There are campsites all over the place, both wild and organised, with some strategically located near the start of one of the trails.
The ANPRALE (Río Azul-Lago Escondido Natural Protected Area) is where the main hiking circuits are located. Many are long and require a full day, and there are so many to do that it is advisable to have several days to complete at least the most classic ones.
The high season for trekking is around summer (December to March), when the weather is mild and optimal for hiking. In addition, the average rainfall is lower during this season. However, it is important to take into account that especially in January and February the number of tourists can be high, so if you are thinking of staying in a hotel it is advisable to make a reservation in advance or, just in case, take a tent with you in case you cannot find anything.
