Information

The Ruta de los Acantilados (Route of the Cliffs) of Río Negro, is a 179 km long road that starts in the locality of El Cóndor, in the province of Río Negro. It corresponds to Provincial Route 1, which runs parallel to and a short distance from the sea coast.

Only about 29 kilometres from El Cóndor to La Lobería are asphalted, the rest is gravel or sand. It is advisable to do it with 4x4 vehicles, since in some stretches of the road there is usually a lot of loose sand and it can be difficult to drive along it. Before travelling, it is convenient to check the state of the road at one of the nearby tourist offices. Take into account that there is no petrol station along the entire route.

This road goes from El Cóndor to almost San Antonio Este (it ends a little before reaching the village). Along the whole route, there are many descents to uninhabited beaches, totally wild. Only in La Lobería and Bahía Creek you can see some buildings and some basic services (but very few). For this reason, it is advisable to bring everything you need, be it food, drinks and so on.

The main points starting from El Cóndor are:
a) Río Negro Lighthouse: it is 2 km away from El Cóndor. It is a lighthouse that can be visited on certain days of the week.
b) El Espigón: 18 km from El Cóndor. It is a natural breakwater that enters the sea, where some footbridges were made to be able to walk along it.
c) Playa Bonita: 20 km away.
d) La Lobería: 29 km away. Fantastic beach with sandy parts and cliffs, where you can often see some sea lions.
e) Punta Bermeja Reserve: 32 km away. There is a large colony of sea lions that can be observed from a lookout point.
f) Bahía Rosas: approximately 51 km away. It has an enormous beach, very long and wide.
g) Bajada de Echandi: at 66 km. It is a descent to the beach, made through a cliff.
h) Bahía Creek: 101 km away. Almost the only sparsely populated area, with some minimal services.
i) Between kilometre 102 and 105 there is an area of large dunes, which makes the road very sandy.
j) Caleta de los Loros Natural Protected Area: starts at approximately kilometre 112. Be careful if you enter the sea, as there are areas that become underwater when the tide rises.
k) Caleta de los Loros: at 113 km there is an access road to the cove, which is a piece of land that is submerged when the tide comes in.
l) Punta Mejillón or Pozo Salado: at 122 km there is a road, which after 5 km leads to a camping area with access to the coast. The beach is wide with cliffs.
